Cultural Tradition to Embrace: Hanami from Japan
One cultural tradition I find fascinating and wish existed more prominently in other countries, including my own, is the Japanese custom of Hanami. This beautiful tradition involves the appreciation of the transient beauty of flowers, particularly cherry blossoms, known as “sakura.”
The Essence of Hanami
Hanami, which translates to “flower viewing,” is a time-honored practice in Japan that dates back to the Nara Period (710–794). It typically takes place in spring when cherry blossoms bloom, transforming landscapes into breathtaking seas of pink and white. The tradition is more than just admiring flowers; it is a celebration of nature, beauty, and the fleeting nature of life.
The Hanami Experience
During Hanami, families, friends, and colleagues gather in parks and gardens for picnics under the blossoming trees. These gatherings often include delicious food, drinks, and joyful conversations. I wished we looked at “older folks” the way eastern cultures seem to do! How? Like they are extremely important!
They’re usually the wisest, with a lot of knowledge to share!
We don’t have cherry blossom festivals here, but in Traverse City we have the Cherry Festival when the cherries are ripe, and besides a parade, rides, and lots of fun shopping, there are many places selling food made with cherries – pies, sundaes, jellies and jams, dried cherries, even cherry salsa, barbecue sauce, different kinds of chocolate covered cherries, etc.

It will be our first time there, so it will be a taster for potential further visits and exploring. We love going to the UK and Europe every 3 years, so Japan will be a big contrast from the castles. My family and I have lived here for the past 3 years and we love it! The locals are very accepting to outsiders, as long as you show them and their land the respect it deserves! The food and sightseeing is to die for! I promise you will enjoy your vacation!
Thats awesome, weve heard the same from friends who have been there. Were 2 hrs in with our flight to Tokyo! A dear friend in Norwich said Japan is unlike anywhere in the world, its truly incredible and food to die for.
